It's officially December and naturally, I am starting to think about what I, and the other fashion girlies, will be wearing in the upcoming year. Now before you start yelling at me let me start with a disclaimer. I am not saying that you need to buy into trends. I of all people am an advocate for people wearing whatever the hell you want. Especially now, when trends seem to be going in and out of fashion in the blink of an eye, it can be overwhelming. If you buy into a trend it feels like the next week it's out of style. However, this list isn't a prediction or forecast of the hottest trends for 2024. It is simply a list of my predictions for what we will see in fashion in the upcoming year. The difference is, you don't have to wear these things to be fashionable or trendy. If you like them, try them out! If you don't not to worry. Fashion is supposed to be fun, so let's have fun with it. I also think it will be interesting for me to look back at this list this time next year and see what I got right and what I got wrong. So, based on my thorough research on Pinterest, Instagram, and all the other go-to platforms for style inspo, here are my fashion predictions for 2024.
Charms on Everything
When I first started this blog I wrote about the trend where people were decorating their bags with charms, chains, ribbons, and beads a la Jane Birkin. Going into the new year I can tell that not just bag charms, but all kinds of charms are going to be a big thing. Bag charms will become more popular, as will charm necklaces with a million charms, charm bracelets, charms on earrings, and maybe even charms in hair. I've seen many TikToks of people going to particular shops in NYC to get their own personalized charm necklaces made. Soon enough I think that jewelry retailers, who haven't already, will pick up on this and start making their own versions of the necklaces.
I am personally obsessed with this trend. I started to get into it when I saw Italian charm bracelets or Zoppini bracelets becoming popular. As someone who had one of these as a child I was so excited to get mine out again and start adding to it. I have also participated in the bag charm trend slightly, having thifted a pair of wooden beads that now hand from my everyday bag.
If you want to get your hands on some charms yourself, here are some places to check out:
Another great place to find unique pieces such as these is Etsy. Happy hunting!
Cinched Waists & Full Skirts
I'm betting that in 2024 we will be seeing a lot more dresses and skirts with cinched waists and full skirts. In other words, the Dior silhouette and drop waists. I am absolutely in love with these types of dresses and think they are so timelessly elegant and chic. Elsa Hosk has posted many looks featuring this type of shape on her socials and she makes it look so damn good that I am falling even more in love with it.
I do want to make one thing clear: just because a silhouette or shape of clothing is in style does not mean that you need to morph your body to achieve this look. It is all about the proportions of clothing, not what is underneath of it. Finding properly structured pieces for your body type is what will allow you to achieve this look.
I have seen mainly 2 variations of this, one being the classic Dior style shilouette that sits at the waist, and another which is more of a drop wait with the same fullness in the skirt. Both of these are great and you can choose whichever you think would better suit you. I think that a slight drop waist gives for a more cool girl vibe. It says yes I'm classy and elegant but also super cool and just threw this on. It gives me a certain Zoe Kravitz energy which naturally I'm attracted to because she has fantastic style (or stylists).
Here are some variations of this style currently on the market (tap the pics for links):
Polka Dots
One of my more niche predictions for the upcoming year is the return of polka dots. I don't have a ton of reference material for this trend yet because I think it is going to start gaining more momentum in 2024. As we continue to see, styles and trends from the 2010s are starting to return, whether we like it or not. But with most trend revivals what I used to think I hated is starting to grow on me. This stings all the more now that I am old enough to be seeing trends from my childhood coming back. Enter the polka dot.
I think the way we are going to be seeing polka dots in the 2020s will be different from that of the 2010s as they will be far less flashy. Plenty of small, black and white spots, that are consistent in size. Maybe we will see a red version here and there but not the same pink and monstrosities we've seen in decades past. The first place I will be looking for pieces like this is the thrift store. Polka dot blouses and dresses in sheer fabrics will likely be plentiful.
Here is what I could find currently on the market:
The Exposed Bra
The next style I can see blowing up this year is a new take on the 2000s exposed bra. Made infamous by one Carrie Bradshaw (argue with the wall), the exposed bra trend resurfaced in the 2010s with the bralette epidemic. I only call it an epidemic because as a gal with a fuller chest, I wanted to be that girl so badly but that trend just simply didnt work on me. So trust and believe that I am thrilled to see the next variation of this trend in 2024. The reason I think it will be making a comeback is because of the popularity of these specific types of corset tops such as the Melanie Top from Reformation. The colour blocking on the cups of the corset could easily be confused for a different colour bra peaking out through the top of the garment. With dupes of this specific corset already popping up, I think this may be just the tipping point we need to see the return of bra-gate.
Dark Red (again)
A colour that I predict we will contue to see much more of is dark red. It was all over the runways, its all over my feeds, she's here to stay. I personally love this trend particularly when we're talking about burgundy or oxblood leather. The bright cherry reds are cute, but perhaps a little less timeless. Whereas I don't think that I would ever look at a classic bag in a dark red leather and dislike it.
Leopard Print
Something that I can see becoming more popular in 2024 is leopard and/or cheetah print. I just wrote an entire post about animals prints that you can check out so I won't repeat myself all over again. What i will say however is that this is a clear example of yet again howanother 2010s style is coming back.
Fur (again)
I have been seeing fur on my feeds for the last couple of years now and I think that this will continue into 2024. I think that the reason fur hasn't died out like so many of the micro-trends we have seen in the 2020s is that because its controvercial nature will prevent it from ever becoming entirly mainstream. There are still many people who regardless of the fur being synthetic or second-hand, will not where fur. There are many people, and I myself have felt this way, who want to wear it but are afraid of being ridiculed by said others. PETA and their paint really did a number on all of us. However as I'm sure we're all aware by now, social media is a different world. I'm sure we will still continue to see plenty of fur on our feeds in the upcoming year, regardless of whether or not it was worn just for the pics. If you live somewhere where this trend is more socially exceptable, I envy you.
Almost Skinny Jeans (sorry)
As someone who watches a lot of YouTube surrounding fashion discourse, I've seen a lot of people talking about how they think skinny jeans will be making their return in 2024. Personally, even though I now it is bound to happen, I don 't think that this will be as severe as many of us may fear, I think that we will be seeing skinny jeans in 2 varations 1) in different colours that are so tight you may not even notice that they're supposed to be jeans and 2) in real denim variations that border on stright leg. I think that skinny jean trauma is too great for many of us to the point that we will not see the exact same type of skinny jeans from the 2010s in a very long time. Forthis upcoming year, we will be inching closer and closer, but not quite reach a renaissance.
Fun Tights
One of my favourite ways to spice up a simple LBD is with a pair of fun tights and clearly I'm not alone. I have seen many an It-Girl on social posting in everything from red opaque to plaid tights. I can see this hosiery trend continuing into the 2024, starting with many red nylons being sported in December and fun colours and patterns finishing off many a NYE fit. This is a great and inexpensive way to add some fun flare to your fit and also doubles at keeping you warmer in your skirts and dresses this time of year.
