Let's Talk Colour

Hi Darlings,

I have to admit - I've never been one for spring dressing. Maybe it's because spring seems like such a short season where I live that investing in it seems silly. It could also be my taste for darker, richer colours rather than classic spring pastels. I couldn't quite tell you why the spring colour palette has never appealed to me, but this April I'm having a change of heart. I find myself gravitating towards butter yellows and dusty blue tones. That's why I wanted to sit down with you today and talk about colour, and those which I have been loving.

Pastels for Spring? - Groundbreaking

Dusty Blue

I've always shied away from blue that wasn't denim, as I didn't think it suited my colouring. I have very fair skin, green eyes, and naturally brown hair. Thus, lighter colours never seem to pop on me. However, now that my hair is red I've been considering dabbling in a dusty blue (that's what I'm calling it anyway). I like how it is still borderline pastel yet muted - the perfect spring shade. A particular blouse at Aritzia has really been calling my name in what they call 'slab blue'. Something about it paired with a pair of denim shorts is so chic yet understated.

The problem is finding this particular shade of blue. Even if pieces such as this exist somewhere on the interweb what I called 'dusty blue' is another woman's 'grey blue' or 'cornflower blue' or just plain 'blue'. I will continue my hunt and keep you posted if I find anything (or fold and purchase Miss. Frenchy over here).

Khaki Green/Chartreuse

Nothing says 'I know fashion' quite like wearing something that is conventionally ugly. That's how I feel about thus particular green that I've been fawning after. Is it Chartreuse? Is it khaki green? Is it a lovely shade of Shrek? I'm not entirely sure, but whatever it is I'm obsessed. I havem't been able to stop thinking about this linen Massimo Dutti set I saw a month or so ago. I might just have to bite the bullet soon.

Butter Yellow

If you follow me on my TikTok you know that I won't shut up about butter yellow being the 'it-colour' for spring 2024. I'm just so excited that for once in my life I'm actually liking yellow. Not mustard (you had to be there for the 2016 Urban Outfitters mustard moment), but yellow. Butter yellow to be specific. I'm no colour theorist, nor have I had a colour analysis done, but I think this one may actually look nice on me. If I'm wrong, at least I've passed on the knowledge to those of you who can pull it off. My favourite way I've seen it worn is in suede and satin. My suggestion for finding some good pieces in this colour would be Revolve. Just look at this dress and tell me you're not obsessed.

Lilac Grey

The last spring colour that I've been loving struck me as I watched my sister knit herself a knew sweater. She was using a muted, dusty lilac mohair. Lilac grey we decided to call it. It seems as though the industry doesn't agree with me however, as it was harder to find pieces in this particular shade. Maybe we're ahead of the curve. Or maybe, even better, I made a decision on my own taste without outside influence. Something about lilac is very calming to me. It reminds me of my grandmothers house on a summer day. I'm not sure if I'll be wearing it myself just yet, but I hope I might inspire you to do so.

That concludes all of my current style obsessions. I hope you enjoyed and feel free to share your spring coloured fits with me here or on TikTok @VanillaDarling, I'd love to see them!

Talk soon,

-Vanilla Darling Xx
